Canon 80D vs Canon 7D Mark II

Choosing between the Canon 80D and the Canon 7D Mark II was one of the toughest decisions I faced as a photographer. Both cameras are fantastic, but they cater to slightly different needs. If you’re stuck between these two, let me share my experience to help you decide which one is right for you.

I started photography as a hobby, mostly shooting landscapes and portraits. But as I got more serious, I wanted a camera that could handle fast action, better autofocus, and improved low-light performance. That’s when I narrowed it down to the 80D (APS-C enthusiast DSLR) and the 7D Mark II (semi-professional sports/wildlife powerhouse).

At first, I was drawn to the 80D because of its newer sensor, flip-out touchscreen, and better video features. But then, I tried wildlife photography and realized I needed something more rugged with faster burst speeds. That’s when the 7D Mark II caught my attention.

1. Build Quality & Durability

7D Mark II: Built like a tank! Magnesium alloy body, weather-sealed, and designed for tough conditions (great for wildlife/sports).
80D: Solid but more plasticky. Weather-resistant but not as rugged as the 7D II.

My Take: If you shoot in harsh environments (rain, dust, extreme temps), the 7D Mark II is the clear winner.

2. Autofocus System

7D Mark II: 65-point all-cross-type AF system (amazing for tracking fast-moving subjects like birds or athletes).
80D: 45-point AF (only 27 cross-type), still good but not as advanced as the 7D II.

My Take: The 7D Mark II’s autofocus is unbeatable for action shots. If you shoot sports or wildlife, this is a huge advantage.

3. Burst Shooting Speed

7D Mark II: 10 fps (fantastic for action).
80D: 7 fps (still decent but not as fast).

My Experience: When I tried shooting birds in flight, the 7D Mark II’s speed made a massive difference — I got way more keepers!

4. Image Quality & Sensor

80D: 24.2 MP sensor (better resolution for cropping and portraits).
7D Mark II: 20.2 MP (slightly lower resolution but still excellent).

My Take: The 80D has a slight edge in detail, but the difference isn’t huge. The 7D Mark II’s images are still fantastic.

5. Video Features

80D: Better for video — Dual Pixel AF (super smooth autofocus), flip-out touchscreen, and cleaner 1080p footage.
7D Mark II: No Dual Pixel AF, older video tech, but still decent for manual focus shooters.

My Experience: If you’re into vlogging or run-and-gun video, the 80D is the better choice. But for pure photography, the 7D II wins.

6. Battery Life

7D Mark II: Longer battery life (great for long shoots).
80D: Decent but not as long-lasting.

Which One Did I Choose?

After renting both cameras, I went with the Canon 7D Mark II. Why?

I fell in love with wildlife photography, and the 7D II’s AF and burst speed were game-changers.
The rugged build gave me confidence shooting in rain and dusty environments.
While I loved the 80D’s flip screen and video features, I realized I prioritized stills over video.

That said, if I were more into portraits, travel, or video, I would’ve picked the 80D.

Get the Canon 7D Mark II if you:

Get the Canon 80D if you:

✔ Prefer a more versatile hybrid (photo + video) camera
✔ Want a flip-out touchscreen for vlogging
✔ Shoot mostly portraits, landscapes, or casual photography

Conclusion

Both cameras are excellent, but they serve different purposes. For me, the 7D Mark II was the right choice because of its speed and durability. However, if I were more into video or casual shooting, the 80D would’ve been perfect.
